Portrait session with Karen

I just finished editing shots from a photo shoot I did with Karen-current UC Berkeley student and grad school applicant extraordinaire.

And I’ve been playing with a cool piece of equipment that I recently got-an Alien Bees Ringflash. These shots were lit with the ringflash at various settings.

While I can’t say I’ve completely mastered the use of ringflash, I think the results I’ve been getting so far are pretty good.

And getting someone as photogenic as Karen to model for you doesn’t hurt!

Karen, thanks for collaborating with me on this photo session!

I really like your work clean and nice.

These are cool! The ring flash really helps give them that Vanity Fair fashion look. Nice job.

She is beautiful. Love the fourth one (second horizontal one). Have fun with the ringflash!

Hey…great images. What image “treatment” did you use on the last 2 images? Looks like a cross processing effect. I really like your work.

@delane- Indeed, those have some cross-processing treatment going on. I’m glad you like it :)

Adventure game on the iPhone

Adventure brings me right back to my childhood and it’s currently available free on the iPhone/iPod Touch in the iTunes App Store! Anyone who used to play the Atari 2600 and owns an iPhone or iPod Touch will need no further explanation.

Adventure basically pioneered the action-adventure genre of games, and that though its art is spare and its noises are little more than bleeps and bloops, both are classic and coated with pure nostalgia.” – TUAW.

My Nephew

This is a shot of my Nephew. He always wants to steal my iPhone:)

robinNovember 14, 2008 - 4:54 pm

He’s a cute kid–I love his hair! You have to admit, the iPhone does kind of look like a schwanky version of the little portable video game thing that so many kids have. :)

TristanNovember 14, 2008 - 4:57 pm

@robin – Definitely. And the fact that I do have some games on my iPhone doesn’t help things either ;)

CNN – stop calling it a hologram

You may have seen CNN’s election night coverage where they beamed in some ‘holograms’ (clip above). Well, it wasn’t really a hologram, but you probably knew that. For it to have really been a hologram, the 3D image would have had to have been projected into space, right there in front of Wolf Biltzer. Instead, he was just looking at nothing but a red dot and a remote video feed was switched in with the on air feed.

What about the blue Star Wars like edge around the image? That was added in by CNN for effect.

Who do we use for hosting?

I’ve now changed hosting companies on this site. You may notice that it’s loading a lot faster than before. We are now hosted with HostGator, who seem really good so far in terms of speed, uptime and customer service (aside from their somewhat stupid alligator logo). They have a server partnership with one of the largest and most reliable server colocation facilities in the country (The Planet) and what they do, they do really well. (ie., provide excellent load balancing, speed and uptime). In fact, HostGator ranks at the top of most all shared hosting companies for uptime. As for speed, click around my site, you will likely find it loads very fast with no stalling.

My prior hosting company was DreamHost and while a lot of people really seem to like them for the price, I experienced short bouts of downtime on at least a weekly basis (never any downtime with HostGator). I also had noticeably slower load times and they only have email support, no telephone or live chat. On the plus side, they let you create custom discount coupons and actually make profit by referring others to them. Other hosting companies typically have affiliate programs too although not as attractive ones as DreamHost.

(If you decide to sign up with HostGator, please use my affiliate link.)

I’ve even spoken with busy site owners who have said they couldn’t run their current site on DreamHost shared hosting without upgrading to a VPS but can run the same site on HostGator shared hosting with no problem. DarkMirage.com is one such site.

Prior to DreamHost, I was hosted with EngineHosting for several months. They were really quite good-fast, great support, etc. But their control panel was very minimalistic for me. I wanted more control over my site/domain. Their storage and bandwidth for the price is also rather expensive.

I also tried IXWebhosting for a few months and was sorely disappointed so I would avoid them. Very poor uptime and customer service.

For years (probably 10 years) before all of the above, I used Pair Networks. They were great in terms of uptime and seemed fairly fast although they were expensive for the needs of my new MySQL/PHP WordPress site and just couldn’t compete. When I just had a static site, they were fine.

Note-I’ve heard generally good things about BlueHost although I have not tried them and won’t because they are located in Utah. This means that they censor their customers and will close down your account if they deem any of your content ‘inappropriate’. I even checked with them and one of the pictures in my portraits gallery is not ‘appropriate’ according to them. I dislike the idea of this kind of hypocritical censorship (you can post pictures of people murdering others, but not of the natural human body for example), so I would simply avoid BlueHost or any other hosting company in Utah (ie. WestHost too).

If you have had any bad experiences with a particular hosting company (or positive ones), leave a comment to share your thoughts with others.

UPDATE (May 14th, 2009): BlueHost doesn’t like photographers.

UPDATE (April 2nd, 2010): Still very happy with HostGator, nearly 2 years later and there have been no issues or downtime.

UPDATE (October, 2011): Just re-upped with HostGator and still happy with them.

Good info. I’m on a VPS in the UK, but I’m thinking of moving to a US server. I think I’ll go with HostGator.

HomeListDecember 20, 2010 - 10:56 pm

Found this article from your link to the “bluehost doesnt like photographers” page. I just ran into the same problem, Bluehost told me the max file count I can have is 50k! I previously held Bluehost in a very high regard, and I tried to inquire about more expensive hosting packages but they kept saying they don’t offer any.

Switching to HostGator now thanks to the info you provided. thanks!

Going with HostGator was a good choice, I don’t host very many images, but I do recommend that photographers get an Amazon S3 account because it’s much cheaper than hosting, and it takes off a lot of stress from your server allowing your website pages to open up a lot quicker, and your images to load quick no matter in what country you’re in.

You can easily use HostGator + Amazon S3 at the same time, making it cheap and reliable.

Free iPhone ringtones

Just passing this along. This site is pretty cool – http://audiko.net/

You can download totally free ringtones for your iPhone (and other cellphones).

While there are a few other ways to get free ringtones for your iPhone, the Audiko site makes it extremely easy because the file is already in the correct format. So, all you have to do is download it, play it in iTunes once by double clicking on it and then sync your iPhone. The ringtone will then be available for use!

I’m not really a music ringtone person, but I did try a couple and it seems to work okay.

You can also buy ringtones from the iTunes Store but I think it’s stupid that even if you already own the song, you have to again purchase the ringtone and cannot make one from the song that you own from within iTunes.

This was a great find. Very easy to use, too! Thanks for letting me know!
